Technical and economic limits to the application of the horizontal direction drilling method in the construction of underwater transitions of main pipelines

Abstract: The application of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method is widespread in the world practice for construction of underwater passages of main pipelines. In order to assess its economic and technological feasibility, conditions of construction on more than 100 underwater passages were analyzed.
Draft power of drilling rigs while dragging the pipeline are considered in order to determine the maximum possible length of an underwater passage for each size of the pipeline. Depending of the geological conditions, the draft power was distributed into two groups: when dragging in stable and non-stable soils.
The duration of the underwater passage construction with the HDD method depends to a large extent on the length of the passage, the bottomhole area, the engineering and geological conditions at the site and the technology of well drilling. In order to assess the impact of engineering and geological conditions, the constructed passages were distributed according to the volumetric rate of construction in descending order with an indication of emergency situations that occurred during the work. The selection of the approach is based on the need to average the underwater passages according to such parameters as the passage length and diameter, and the number of expansion stages.
Cost of various methods of underwater passage construction (trenching, HDD, microtunneling) was compared according to the item construction of the pipeline route. Underwater passages vary considerably in length and the type of pipe used. The constructive parameter of the underwater passage was applied to bring these criteria to a single value.
Based on the results of consideration of technical and economic aspects of the pipeline route construction, there were introduced technical and economic limitations of the HDD method application for the construction of underwater passages of main pipelines.
