Abstract: The article describes the topical issues and problems of welding production, contributing to ensuring the reliability of welded joints and, consequently, environmental safety during the pipeline operation. Often, during the welding of high-strength steels due to the increase or decrease in heat input, the metal in the heat-affected zone loses its strength, viscosity and plastic properties and becomes prone to hot and cold cracks. The authors present the analysis of the results of experimental studies of the pipe joint welding thermal cycles, metal and physical studies and calculation methods, which can serve as a basis for developing additional requirements for the welding technology for steels of K65 strength class. Particularly, it has been determined that the choice of the optimum thermal cycle for welding allows making a welded joint with high mechanical properties of metal in the heat-affected zone.
The presented results of scientific studies aimed at improving the reliability of the welded joints of Transneft pipeline system were used in development of regulatory documentation for welding technologies.

Keywords: welding, welded joint, heat input, heat-affected zone, welding thermal cycle, mechanical properties.
