Abstract: The weld joints of weldolets to the pipe, which is an alternative to direct incuts, have been widely used in construction, reconstruction and repair of pipelines. The weldolet pipe joints have been used as a new type assemblies installed on shutdown and pressurized pipelines. The key issue in securing a high-quality weld joint is a high level of heat input in welding, which results in decreased strength, plastic and viscous properties of the pipe metal across the weld line in the heat-affected zone.
The article focuses on the specific features of the quality control for weldolet pipe weld joints. For example, largesized weld seams impede the X-Ray control and impose limitations on its performance. The visual and measuring testing (VMT) and dye-penetrant test (DPT) are not sufficient. The authors suggested an inspection model using the phased-array ultrasonic testing, which provides for relevant quality assurance.
The key factors were highlighted, which influence the testability of weldolet pipe welded joints, VMT and DPT disadvantages were indicated, phased-array ultrasonic testing methods and models were described, advantages of the suggested ultrasonic testing models were demonstrated, properties of welded joint metal, which can be used as basis to apply new rejection rates in weld-joint ultrasonic testing, were described. Besides, normative documents, which regulate the weldolet pipe welded joint quality control, now in force in the territory of the Russian Federation were reviewed; NDT conditions were set forth, and criteria for adjustment and weld joint rejections were suggested.
